More on Boreal forests
Reader Amy Campbell writes, about my posting of Scott Weidensaul's OpEd piece in the NY Times:"Thanks for the posting about the Boreal Forest. You probably know this anyway, but there is another group involved in this country - check it out - www.borealbirds.org. The senior scientist lives in Maine and has had some press lately with his night-time recordings of migrant birds. On our Maine birding e-list, the other night his recorder registered 1,000 individuals overhead! Thanks for your wonderful photographs!"
I visited Boreal Birds. It's a very nice Web site and I was amazed to find out that the White-throated Sparrow does not sing "Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody" as I had assumed. According to their Web site:
The White-throated Sparrow's slow, clear song pure sweet Canada, Canada, Canada, heard across still lakes and through the rugged forests is almost an anthem for the Boreal's unspoiled wilderness.
Well, that's probably a better song than "Old Sam Peadoby." Who was Sam Peabody, anyway?
