Canon EOS 1D Mark III

I purchased the Canon 1D Mark III in December 2008. Canon's flagship EOS-1D Mark III is one of the most advanced EOS Digital SLRs ever produced. It has a new 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System and a 3.0-inch LCD monitor with Canon's Live View technology. The 1D Mark III has a redesigned 100% viewfinder, a new 45-point AF system, and can shoot up to 10 fps continuously with a maximum burst of 110 shots. Dual "DIGIC III" Image Processors work in tandem to speed up every process while refining image quality; a new, lighter body has improved weather sealing and shutter durability. Canon EOS 1D Mark II
I switched to this camera in January of 2005 and retired it in December of 2008. It gave me a lot of terrific images. You can click here to see the photos taken with this camera.

The 8.2 million pixel CMOS sensor, faster DIGIC™ II imaging engine and ability to capture RAW images in continuous bursts of up to 20 frames — thanks to new Canon technology, make the EOS-1D Mark II the world's fastest pro-digital SLR camera and the gold standard for wildlife photography.

Canon doubled the resolution of the imaging sensor, doubled the size of the high speed buffer memory and reevaluated, redesigned and in some cases, actually reinvented the technology that makes the new EOS-1D Mark II camera a reliable, responsive, and remarkable professional digital SLR. Key among those speed-increasing innovations is Canon's first use of dual 32-bit RISC CPUs to operate the camera's autofocus separately with one dedicated to detecting focus while the second controls the lens drive.

Canon 600mm f/4L IS USM

I have owned this lens since 2003 and wouldn not part with it for the world. This lens is ideal for wildlife photography whose optical system has one fluorite element and two UD-glass elements to obtain high resolution and high contrast. Also, the minimum focusing distance was reduced to 18 ft. (5.5m). Extenders such as Canon's EF 2x II and EF 1.4x II can be attached to increase the focal length up to 1200mm while still retaining AF. Image stabilization is a must for wildlife photography. Click here for photos taken with this lens

Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L

This is my primary flight shot lens. Coupled with extension tubes it's great for shooting butterflies and insects. I think this is one of the sharpest lenses Canon makes. Click here for photos taken with this lens.

Canon EOS 40D

I bought this to replace my venerable 10D as a backup and "carry around" camera. Without the grip it is small and lightweight. The grip gives me extra battery time and a shutter button on the side when the camera is held in portrait mode.

I now use the Canon Speedlite 580EX II as my main flash. Newly designed to match with the EOS-1D Mark III in terms of improved dust- and water-resistance, body strength, and the ability to control flash functions and settings from the camera menu (EOS-1D Mark III only). Other features include improved communication reliability through its direct contacts, and recycling time is both 20% shorter than the 580EX and is completely inaudible.

Better Beamer Flash Extender

I use flash as fill light when I shoot--no matter what the conditions. I usually dial down 1-1/3 to 1-2/3 stops.

Wimberley Gimbaled Head

This is a great product by a company with integrity. Highly recommended. This is the only way to go if you have a big lens. Their new model is even better. I also use their camera and lens plates and their flash brackets. The sidekick is great for smaller lenses. I use it with my 400mm f/5.6.

Canon 580EX Flash

I use flash primarily for fill. This is a great unit that has a pretty hefty guide number. I now use it as a second flash and back-up to the EX II.
